Higher Education in Sudan
Sudan's higher education sector has expanded from a handful of institutions at independence to over 68 universities, the largest of which is the University of Khartoum (1902), one of Africa's oldest. The Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research oversees quality assurance, and instruction is primarily in Arabic with English used in science and medical programmes. Political instability and conflict have severely disrupted academic operations and international partnerships in recent years.
